Fluoride

Did you know the most common disease among children is dental caries (cavities). Tooth decay affects more than one-fourth of U.S. children aged 2–5 years and half of those aged 12–15 years. Besides great oral hygiene, the next best way to prevent decay is through fluoride.

Fluoride is a mineral that strengthens the enamel (outer layer of the tooth) to prevent cavities. It can even reverse some cavities before they get too big! Fluoride can be found in toothpastes and mouth rinses. At your child’s dental visit, we apply fluoride topically to the teeth to help strengthen them. Fluoride is also found within most community supplied water. Fluoride is a safe way to prevent cavities and strengthen teeth.

Community water fluoridation is one of the most successful public health measures in United States history. However, not all water has fluoride in it. Some well water supplies have inadequate or no fluoride. If this is the case, we can prescribe your child the appropriate dose of fluoride to help maintain healthy teeth. Bottled water typically does not have fluoride in it either, and has been linked to increased cavity levels in children. Dr. Swiatowicz would be happy to discuss appropriate fluoride use for you and your family at your next dental visit.
